There are three main types of fireplace units.
 1. Wood burning units. These units can burn wood or gas logs and must be vented vertically with only a slight flexibility in the venting from the top of the unit through the roof.
 2. Direct Vent Units. These units run on natural gas. The have a glass cover that remains on the unit at all times. However this setup allows for a much more convienent system of venting. Direct vent units can be vented directly out the wall or up through the ceiling.
 3. Vent Free Units. These units run off natural gas and require no venting. The technology in the burner allows for real life gas conbustion to a real flame with no venting required. Great application for homes without the ability to install venting but want to add a fireplace to their home.
